Email List Building

Happy New Year!  January 1st is the favored day for many entrepreneurs to make New Year’s Resolutions on how they will make this New Year, their best ever.  I am a big proponent of looking at the future and creating a plan with actionable, measurable steps toward achieving those goals.  One of those goals should be Email List Building and identifying how much you want your “List” to grow. They should also include weekly tracking to confirm that the growth you are reaching for is on target.

WHY build your email list?

Entrepreneurs tell me all the time… I don’t need a List, I have a huge following on all my Social Media platforms or my company keeps all that data I don’t need to worry. But in case no one has shared this with you before, I feel obligated to tell you that those aren’t your lists!  Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Periscope, BLAB, SnapChat, etc. all hold their own lists, you have access to them when you use that platform but if any of these companies decided to shut down or charge you a fee for using the list you would find yourself wishing you had been collecting the information from the people that are interested in your products or services all along.  That is why I always say…

The long term sustainable growth of your business depends on you having access to the people that have interest in what you sell or do. PERIOD. If you no longer had access to them you would have to start over from scratch and there are many, many people that have had to do just that because they lost control of a hacked social media account.  Just ask Chalene Johnson what happened to her!

Are you afraid of the “F” Word?

I have been told and have come to realize that I am a bit of an anomaly.  I purchased my first home at the age of 19 and started my first company at the age of 20. (Well actually I started my entrepreneurial activity at the age of 12 but that is a story for another time)  My reason for sharing this with you is to encourage you, motivate you and give you hope for the days when those closest to you don’t believe in you or have their doubts either about your abilities or the enterprise or endeavor you are going into.

Let me start by mentioning that I believe EVERYONE who engages the three “D”s of Determination, Drive and Discipline can become wildly successful in business!  I am also keenly aware of the other “D” word which has derailed more entrepreneurs than any of us care to admit.  DOUBT.  Doubt is going to creep in on the most well manifested dreams and can overtake even the most committed entrepreneurs if we let it. Pushing past that doubt is what will make the difference in your future and determine if you are truly an Entrepreneurial Rock Star in the making.  To inspire you, I’d like to share my story…

I moved out on my 18th birthday as a sign of my emerging independence. (I know you Entrepreneurial Rock Stars understand the drive I had!)  At the tender age of 19 I decided I wanted to buy my own home and I set out to do just that.  I had a good job (several of them actually), I had been saving for years and I was ready to make an investment.  I went looking for a home and when I shared my excitement with others, their reaction was all very similar, “You’re too young!”,   “You can’t afford that!”, “That is too much responsibility.” etc.  Talk about taking the wind out of my sails!  Now I will say, although these people qualified as “Naysayers”, they truly cared about me and were simply worried that I might make a wrong decision.  Their concern for me caused me to feel doubt.  “What if they are right?” oh no… here comes the dreaded “F” bomb… “What if I… FAIL?”  I felt discouraged, frustrated and confused until I looked at the big picture and realized I had all I needed to make that dream a reality and the only thing holding me back was the lack of belief others had and my willingness to receive it.  Lucky for me I am a bit stubborn and after hearing what they had to say, I reminded myself  I had a good job, good credit and someone willing to sell a piece of property I wanted… so I did it anyway.

That was the first of many homes I would own and it was a great investment!   Making good decisions (ones that end favorably for us!) gives us the confidence to make the next big decision, so I decided to start my own company.  I heard the same negativity.  “You are too young”, “People won’t take you seriously”, “You have too much financial responsibility”, and then the “F” bomb again “What if you… FAIL?”

No one likes to fail so it is sometimes easier for us as entrepreneurs to just drop those dreams instead of pressing on to face another “F” word… FEAR.  We hide behind our own fear or the fear of others instead of facing it head on to become the Entrepreneurial Rock Star that lives inside of us.  I decided to let my Rock Star shine by coming up with a new mantra to live by.

Don’t get me wrong, you need to be smart in business and weigh what you believe with the information others provide you with so you can make an informed decision, but then when you make the decision, GO FOR IT!  Second guessing yourself will lead you down the wrong path and leave you feeling confused and anxious. Take responsibility for your choices and treat your dreams like the precious gift they are and protect them from the unwitting comments of the “Naysayers”.

I am happy to say this was another great decision and was the first of many companies I would start, build and sell.  When you believe in yourself, others will too.  CONFIDENCE IS CATCHING!

As a Christian, I truly believe that “I can do all things in Christ who gives me strength” Phil 4:13 so I know I can never actually fail.  There will be set backs and there will be hurdles.  I can tell you I have experienced plenty of them but those trials have brought me to the place I am today.  People often ask me what advice I would offer a young entrepreneur that was starting out or that wanted to grow their business and I can honestly say… find a mentor.  Finding someone who has already traveled the road you want to drive down will give you the keen insight to help you avoid many of the pitfalls most businesses experience which inevitably will increase your success!  That is one of the reasons I started mentoring programs and the Entrepreneurial Rock Stars Facebook group.  I want people to have a place to get support and encouragement with enough reality mixed in that they can make informed decisions on the best direction for their businesses.  I love helping other people and offer a complimentary 20 min coaching session for anyone that wants a little help to #rockthatdream

Are you leaving money on the table? In sales there is nothing worse than finding out you left the proverbial “Money on the Table” for your competitor to swing by and pick up after you are gone.  Your first line of defense should be to focus on your skill of asking questions.  When you ask the right questions, you’ll have enough information to help your customer make the best decision for themselves and or their company. Let me give you an example:

Your High School Reunion is quickly approaching and you want to look GREAT for the big night.  You go shopping and find a specialty boutique that has a gorgeous dress.  After you try it on, you KNOW this is the dress for you.  You look amazing and you will feel confident and know you look fantastic!  You get home to show your friends or family your stunning attire and you realize… you don’t have shoes, pantyhose or accessories to match… your ensemble is not even close to complete…  How do you feel?

Discouraged? Disappointed?  Frustrated? Stressed?  So if this was you, what would you do now?  Would you drive all the way back to the specialty boutique where the salesperson already let you down? Or do you go to the closest place to get the job done?

Most of us have busy lives so we would choose the latter and thus have just given some unsuspecting salesperson a “gift” because the customer is already primed and in a buying mood.  She knows she needs the additional items and is prepared to purchase them so how and why did this happen?  The salesperson stopped selling before the customer was done buying.

Fear of selling is a very common problem among salespeople.  We have a fear of being “pushy” or unfortunately, some are just down right lazy (they obviously aren’t being paid on commission!)  So how can prevent ourselves from being one of these frustrating stops for our customers?  Don’t Stop Selling Until Your CUSTOMER is Done Buying! 

Important Note:  The word CUSTOMER is in all capitals and underlined.  It is all about the CUSTOMER!

Prom ProposalWhere do you start?  How about the obvious. If a customer is coming to you with a specific goal in mind, (i.e. looking great for her high school reunion) what does she need to do that?  Obviously she needs “the works” if she wants to make that lasting impression that we are all desirous of.  If she can’t afford it, she will let you know, but it is YOUR JOB to present all the options to her so she can make her own decisions.  She may decide on a couple of the items and not all of them, but don’t pre-judge people whether you know them personally or not. (That will be an upcoming blog post!)  Do your job and you will likely be surprised by the outcome.

So let’s go back in time to the boutique and you have just found the perfect dress, how could this have been handled differently?  We offer up solutions and suggestions for our customer to make her shopping experience as simple as possible.  We are going to use word choices that will encourage and motivate her to want your products because of the benefit they have to HER.

“You look simply amazing in that dress!  I think that is the perfect choice, now let me gather up some accessories for your to try with it so we can experience the complete package.”

Now we try on shoes, we find a matching purse and of course the right jewelry!  Now you feel like a million bucks!  You know when you walk out of that store and go home, you can put this little ensemble (that is all together) in your closet until that special night because your salesperson provided everything you needed. She is a professional and takes her job seriously enough to ask the right questions, offer suggestions and share her honest opinions. All of course while respecting the customers decisions.

Now that is what selling is and if you were that salesperson, you would have just gotten a customer for life.  The next time she or someone she knows is looking for a special occasion outfit, she will be contacting you or referring others to you and you have now created a raving fan.

Living the Life of Your Dreams?

Are you Living The Dream?

When you were in high school, did you ever have a guidance counselor tell you that you should “Live your dreams!”?

Probably not, but “Why?”  is the question we should be asking ourselves. People tend to  live what they learn and most people are not taught to dream.  As a matter of fact they are often criticized for it… “Stop Daydreaming”   “Get your head out of the clouds”   “Be realistic”, etc. Since most of the people in your life have been subjected to this same perspective, their dreams have likely been tucked up on a shelf or locked away in a closet somewhere. I believe that although they may have been subdued and have probably stopped pounding on the door to let them out, they are still there, we just have to wake them up and resuscitate them.

Most of us dream of having financial freedom and being able to take exotic vacations, time off of work when we want and being our own boss. We don’t want to feel guilty for taking time off to see our kids play sports or to care for them when they are sick. We want the best of both worlds and they are both available to you as an entrepreneur!

So let’s start by figuring out what you are passionate about.  What makes you smile or happy?  What do you love doing?  What is your hobby?  If you knew you could make a living doing your hobby, would you?  If the answer is no, you may need to find a new hobby that you actually love!  If the answer is yes, you should start your research right now on how you can turn that Passion into a Profitable Career.
